The benefit of using DirectoryPress, in my opinion, is the wordpress infrastructure that forms the backbone of the theme. Havin tested and developed extensively using this theme, I have to agree that the themes are ugly and all similar, and it is NOT as uncomplicated as you think. Here is a link to some of the wordpress web directories and functions being developed. Reading between the lines I am in the process of combining the best of the DirectoryPress functions with the best WordPress has to offer. I hope to release a similar directory theme for WordPress in 2012/2013 which will be free, with additional functions and features.

Google really dislikes when pages go missing, they come back as 404 errors and eventually google either resets it or lowers ranking of the website. So it’s important to replace missing pages, or redirect to an active page.

Some websites i’ve seen have kept the page active, but removed its content so when google crawls the page, it is still there but is just a redundant page.

The Toyota Corrolla has to be the most common car in my own town. The Taxi drivers love them, perhaps because of how reliable they are. The Good old Japanese engines are bullet proof.

I think the quality of a directory is usually fairly obvious. Alternatively, use an online tool like MajesticSeo to look at the directory’s backlink profile, particularly if you’re going to purchase a link…

The main problem that I’ve found with DirectoryPress so far is that because it tries to do so many things it’s very, very, slow and consumes a large amount of CPU compaed to other sites I have.

If you use it to have a large number of categories, in particular, you will need to come up with lots of workarounds to speed it up.

Also, the default themes are pretty ugly and you’ll need to design a child theme to make it look pretty.

So although, it does work out-of-the-box, there’s a lot to learn and a lot to do to get it working in an optimal way.

And after all, a directory is just a clever list of links really, isn’t it?
