Directory Press Review

DirectoryPress is a WordPress plugin to turn your blog into a directory.

It comes “out of the box” with lots of directory features

I totally disagree with this, it took me a few hours to make it look like a normal directory and when you pay $199 you expect more.

Good things about it:

  • easy to install, it’s basically a WordPress theme
  • DMOZ import, Google Maps integrated
  • lots of payment gateways are supported
  • Very customizable link/advertising options
  • You can create categories very quickly

Bad things about it:

  • It’s paid and it’s not cheap
  • Complicated setup, you get lost in the options
  • Almost all templates look the same and they don’t look well
  • You don’t have a blog anymore, no more posts/widgets
  • It’s not compatible with other WordPress themes

Overall, phpLD is much better. DirectoryPress looks like an improvisation. Also, you can get phpLD 2.x free of charge.

In my personal opinion, this is a half-baked, fix-it on the run, theme that has yet to show me a well-written release for any major upgrade.
Please don’t tell me you paid $199 for this thing! It’s nearly always on sale at $79. (Ask for a refund of the difference!) And if you google for the title and coupons, you just might find deeper discounts.
The worst part is the arrogance I’ve experienced from the author. If you object too much, or ask for answers too much, he has been quick and keen on booting my ass out of the forum.

The main problem that I’ve found with DirectoryPress so far is that because it tries to do so many things it’s very, very, slow and consumes a large amount of CPU compaed to other sites I have.

If you use it to have a large number of categories, in particular, you will need to come up with lots of workarounds to speed it up.

Also, the default themes are pretty ugly and you’ll need to design a child theme to make it look pretty.

So although, it does work out-of-the-box, there’s a lot to learn and a lot to do to get it working in an optimal way.

And after all, a directory is just a clever list of links really, isn’t it?

The benefit of using DirectoryPress, in my opinion, is the wordpress infrastructure that forms the backbone of the theme. Havin tested and developed extensively using this theme, I have to agree that the themes are ugly and all similar, and it is NOT as uncomplicated as you think. Here is a link to some of the wordpress web directories and functions being developed.

Reading between the lines I am in the process of combining the best of the DirectoryPress functions with the best WordPress has to offer. I hope to release a similar directory theme for WordPress in 2012/2013 which will be free, with additional functions and features.

For what it is worth, there is a new release of DirectoryPress out soon. This will be V7, and it is packed with more features and ability. This not only makes this theme even more fantastic, but having some WordPress ”hooks” now built in, it becomes easy for WordPress users to create additional functionality and custom options and include these in the plugin architecture of WordPress.

As an example I have released a FETCH META PLUGIN to showcase the ability of integrating new functionality with DirectoryPress.

If you haven’t considered DirectoryPress, maybe you should do !

Far too complicated CSS and very cumbersome code for what it is. As for editing the CSS yourself, it’s rocket science (and I’m a programmer); CSS overload in my personal view for what it actually does; and takes CPU effort to load even the basis page structures. For me (personally), I would not recommend this product; unless you want Gtmetrix to remind you of the effort you will need to make to bring even the basics up to scratch; which should have been resolved and tested in advance. When it comes to load speeds and other tests, the template (even without any content being added) came up with major issues.

Avoid DirectoryPress at all costs. Code is very buggy and amateurish.

It’s great that you’re advising me to avoid this “at all costs.” What pray tell is the alternative for a non programmer with little money.
